CHINA'S Na Li made a successful return to the professional tour with a gripping three-set victory over Belarusian teenager Victoria Azarenka in the Australian Women's Hardcourt final yesterday.
World No. 29 Li, in her comeback tournament from a long-term rib injury, defeated fellow unseeded player Azarenka 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in steamy conditions at Royal Pines Resort. Li now has the distinction of being crowned the last champion of this event before it merges with the men's Adelaide International and shifts to Brisbane next year. It was the 25-year-old's second WTA title, adding to her 2004 victory in Guangzhou. Her projected world ranking will now climb to No. 24, while 2005 world junior champion Azarenka's ranking should rise to 25 tomorrow.Azarenka needed treatment for a right upper thigh injury when leading 4-3 in the first set. The world No. 30 called a medical time-out and came back with her leg heavily strapped. But the injury didn't seem to affect her movement as she went on to win the first set 6-3 in her third WTA final. In the second set, a frustrated Azarenka began losing her composure, allowing Li back into the match as China's top player stepped up a gear to claim the second set 6-3. The third set was locked at 4-4 when Li broke Azarenka with a cracking backhand winner to lead 5-4.
